Magna LLC cultivates land in southern Colorado for the purpose of growing high potency industrial hemp. In 2019, we grew 110 acres for a total poundage of over 300,000 lbs. In 2020 we will be investing heavily in R&D (Planting Dates, Row Spacing, Weed Control, Fertilizers) by planting over 5 million hemp seeds and consulting with a number of other parties to grow and test verified hemp strains. Magna LLC is rooted in the Southern Colorado farming community and works hand in hand with local farmers. We are expanding our cultivation network to include hundreds of acres under pivot irrigation. With more crop land being put towards hemp every year, we are always evolving best management practices to reflect the goals of high quality hemp production, water conservation and maximum profitability.
Magna LLC is rapidly gaining the capability to efficiently harvest the largest hemp fields in Colorado. Correct harvesting and drying practices are a critical part of ensuring a high quality product for consumers and a strong return on investment. Magna LLC is a technology driven company with a proven strategy that significantly lowers trichome/cannabinoid loss during the harvest, drying and cleaning process. Experience has allowed us to develop our most effective planting methods that encourages the plants to focus and produce buds at the top of the plant. Directing cannabinoid production to the pinnacle of the hemp plant allows larger yields, higher cannabinoid levels, efficient harvests and low levels of unmarketable flower due to ground contamination.
Industrial hemp has proved to be labor-intensive and farmers admit they were surprised at how labor costs quickly added up after planting and especially at harvest time. The balance between hands and machines becomes an economic decision. It is a balance between the cost of labor and the loss of quality as the crop dries in the field. Traditionally, mechanically harvested hemp brings a lower price compared to hand harvested hemp. In fact, our recent research shows that up to 50% of cannabinoids can be lost due to incorrect harvesting practices. Pre harvest and post harvest samples were compared and showed rough handling and poor harvesting techniques correlated strongly with cannabinoid loss. Our analysis showed 10% levels reduced to 5.4% after field drying and combine harvesting. What's the take away? Equipment and timing are everything.
Lack of a viable harvesting plan was named as one of the top reasons many farmers struggled in 2019. “A lot of people were so worried about securing genetics and getting planted that they kind of kicked the can down the road and thought they’d figure it out in September or October,” said Brian Griffin, hemp supply manager for Mile High Labs, an extraction company in Broomfield, Colorado. Being that most farmers rely on third parties to harvest and dry, equipment availability and scheduling backlogs left farmers finding there was limited or no capacity to get their crop out of the field.

When working with hemp for the purpose of extracting oil, different separation methods are employed. The harvest method will usually determine the quality of the incoming material. Foreign material (debris) in the biomass dictates the amount and type of separation that needs to be performed before the cleaned and ground hemp can be considered for oil extraction. Seeds and stems significantly lower potency levels and clog most extraction equipment. Most processors are sending hemp back to the originating farm if they deem the hemp unfit for processing due to foreign material.
